Survey finds tech vendors do not understand challenges owners and crew face

Technology vendors do not understand the challenges shipowners and crew face, according to a survey carried on this site.

The latest MarPoll, a quarterly topical shipping survey, has already received more than 400 votes with 10 more days till the vote closes. Results will be revealed in the next issue of Maritime CEO magazine.

More than three quarters of those polled to date believe tech vendors do not comprehend the trials and tribulations faced by seafarers and their employers. Nevertheless, the survey had some strident views from those on the side of the vendors.

“Oh yes we do,” wrote one vendor, adding: “We spend lots of time listening and learning; adapting tech developing financing models etc, etc. And it’s a two-way street – we have to work together, to collaborate rather than a exist in a combative state.”

Another voter commented: “The challenge is that most owners and crew don’t understand the benefits of technology.”

Other questions in the current survey look at dry bulk, containers, offshore, tankers and the environment. There is no registration and voting can take as little as just two minutes – although we do appreciate comments left behind by readers too.
