Transocean Winner is on its way to Turkey again soon

The semi-submersible drilling rig that ran aground off the coast of Scotland is likely to recommence being towed to Turkey for decommissioning by the end of September, reports say.

The 17,000-tonne Transocean Winner was refloated by salvors last week and was towed to Broad Bay on the far side of the isle of Lewis in the Western Isles, where it ran aground in early August when its tow line snapped.

The rig (pictured) is likely to be loaded onto a semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel for its voyage to Turkey, according to local reports.

Two of the rig’s four fuel tanks ruptured when it ran aground, spilling around 53,000 litres of diesel into the sea. Reports say most of the pollution was dispersed harmlessly.

The rig has, however, left behind some 40 pieces of metal debris on the shoreline. An operation is underway to recover them.
