Jakarta: Japanese shipbuilding group Tsuneishi is planning to open a yard in Indonesia this year. It follows on from yards in Japan, the Philippines and China. The new Indonesian yard will focus on small- and medium-sized vessels, leaving the yard in Cebu in the Philippines to focus on larger ship types. Officials from Tsuneishi have declined to explain where exactly the new Indonesian yard will be based.
With Japanese yards increasingly being priced out of the international market, seeking overseas expansion has been vital for many to stay afloat. However, back home the plans by some Japanese yards to expand overseas have been attacked for the potential to lose intellectual property. With three yards overseas – including Indonesia – Tsuneishi has led the way in international expansion. [22/04/14]
