Two officers indicted in US for illegal discharges from cargo ship

Two ship officers have been indicted by the US Department of Justice for offences relating to illegal discharge of oily waste into US waters earlier this year.

The two men are accused of using a so-called “magic pipe” to circumvent pollution prevention equipment, influencing other crewmen aboard Greek-owned cargo ship Ocean Hope to go along with the deception, faking relevant log entries and lying to US Coast Guard (USCG) investigators about the incidents.

A federal grand jury in Greenville, North Carolina, returned the nine-count indictment against the men, chief engineer Rustico Yabut Ignacio and the second engineer Cassius Flores Samson.
