Two top journalists join Asia Shipping Media

Singapore: Asia Shipping Media (ASM), the publishers of this title and five others around the world, announced today the hiring of a couple of top journalists to its roster of writers. Holly Birkett, an award winning British journalist (pictured) starts today as the company’s Online Editor. Holly will oversee the content on the company’s six websites, contributing articles, liaising with our global network of journalists as well as looking to develop the online brand and identities of the many websites under the ASM umbrella.

Previously Holly was editor at Hazardous Cargo Bulletin. Prior to that she edited Port Technology International. Among her list of achievements, Holly is the current Seahorse Social Media Journalist of the year. The Seahorse Awards are an annual London-based ceremony highlighting the best in maritime journalism.

After leaving Hazardous Cargo Bulletin, a couple of months ago, Holly embarked on an epic journey with a Maersk containership from Malaysia across the Indian Ocean.

On the new appointment, ASM’s editorial director, Sam Chambers commented: “Holly is exactly what we needed, a young, energetic, social media savvy journalist who will help build all our sites so that they are updated more often. She’ll help build up the readership via her social media skills too.”

ASM’s social media reach at the moment is closing in on 60,000 people making the company one of the fastest growing on the web.

Separately, ASM also announced today the appointment of Charlotte So as the company’s new Hong Kong correspondent. Charlotte worked for a couple of Cantonese newspapers before becoming the transport correspondent at Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post for eight years. In that time, Charlotte built up impressive contacts both in Hong Kong and across the mainland. Charlotte will be writing for SinoShip and Maritime CEO. SinoShip has 12 correspondents in six cities across Greater China.

ASM’s Chambers said: “Hong Kong is one of the most important places on the maritime map, and one that we have had very strong coverage and contacts in since this company was established. Charlotte’s appointment underscores our commitment to this vital trading hub.”

Next year sees ASM launch a special Hong Kong magazine while the company continues to position many of its popular breakfasts and lunches in the Special Administrative Region. [01/10/14]
