Ukrainian master disappears from MSC containership in Italy

A 54-year-old Ukrainian master has disappeared from the 2,000 teu containership MSC Giannina while the vessel was en route from the Italian ports of Gioia Tauro to Genoa.

The crew realised that the man, whose name is Juri Kharytonov, was missing when the ship was sailing between the islands of Elba and Corsica in the Thyrrenian Sea. They then raised the alarm and police in Genoa were alerted.

When MSC Giannina arrived at the Voltri Terminal Europa at the port of Genoa the investigator placed in charge by the local court initiated legal proceedings and the vessel was arrested.

Each member of the Ukrainian crew were questioned for hours but none of them could give any useful information about the master’s disappearance.
