Up to 9 feared dead as ship sinks off South Korea

Up to nine crew are feared dead after the Hong Kong-flagged 6,551 dwt general cargo ship Jin Tian sank in icy, windy waters between South Korea and Japan early this morning.

South Korean and Japanese coast guard vessels and aircraft as well as two commercial ships have been combing the area south of Jeju Island today, managing to pick up 13 crewmembers after a distress call was sent out near midnight with the ship then abandoned.

The vessel was carrying lumber from Papua New Guinea to South Korea.
