US fines Korea’s Doorae Shipping nearly $1m for polluting discharge off Hawaii

US authorities on Tuesday fined the owners of a South Korean oil tanker $950,000 after oily bilge water was dumped from the vessel into the sea a few hundred miles off Hawaii.

Company officials compounded the offence by trying to deceive investigators with falsified records and by making false statements about the incident to the US Coast Guard (USCG).

Doorae Shipping is the owner in question and the polluting tanker is called B.Sky. Doorae pleaded guilty to failing to accurately record the dumping and to making false statements.

The incident happened in February.
