Van Oord selects Port of Tyne as base for RWE’s UK offshore wind giant

The Port of Tyne in northeast England has been selected by Van Oord as the storage and marshalling base for the Sofia offshore wind farm from 2024.

The Dutch marine construction firm will utilise the Port of Tyne’s 200-acre Tyne Clean Energy Park, which has recently benefited from £20m ($24.6m) of infrastructure modernisation.

The company is responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of the wind turbine foundations and inter-array cables for 1.4 GW Sofia, the largest offshore wind project in RWE’s current portfolio. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational in 2026, generating enough green energy to power approximately 1.2m UK homes.

The Tyne Clean Energy Park is already the home of the Dogger Bank operations and maintenance base, which once completed will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm.
