Vessel grounds off Greek island, debris and oil reported

Authorities are working to contain significant pollution around the Greek island of Andros after a 5,553 dwt general cargo ship, Cabrera, ran aground there on Saturday during treacherous weather conditions. All crew were evacuated and images and videos from the local coast guard suggest the 2007-built ship is a total loss. It is suffering a 45 degree list and appears to be breaking up on rocks.

The vessel was transporting iron from Greece to Finland when the accident occurred.

Bad weather around the Aegean in the past week has seen at least three other minor maritime events. Both debris from the ship breaking up and oil has been reported on the beaches of Andros, one of the closest Greek islands to Athens and a popular weekend destination for Athenians.

The Cabrera is owned by German KG, Erwin Strahlmann.
