Western Australia ports brace for cyclone, anchorages cleared

Sydney: The ports of Dampier and Ashburton have had their anchorages cleared today ahead of a likely hit by a tropical cyclone on Thursday.

A tropical low that formed off Indonesia earlier this week is likely to pose a threat to coastal communities, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has warned, with the inbound storm bringing in winds in excess of 100 kmh.

The cyclone is likely to miss Port Hedland, the nation’s top iron ore export facility.

Rio Tinto uses Dampier for iron ore shipments, while Chevron ships LNG from Ashburton.
