World’s largest boxship makes maiden China call

Shanghai: Ship spotters in Shanghai will have to trek out to the deepwater port of Yangshan, some 35km southeast of the city if they want to catch a glimpse of the historic maiden call of the world’s largest boxship, due to arrive at 21.00 hours this evening.

The giant 18,000 teu Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller is on its maiden voyage and is sailing to Shanghai from Busan. It is the first of 20 such ships ordered by Maersk Line at Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. Deployed on the Asia-Europe the vessel, some 400 m long and built from enough steel to construct eight Eiffel Towers, will call Ningbo on Saturday.

The giant ships have recently been trumped by China Shipping which announced in May plans to build five 18,400 teu ships at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. [18/07/13]
