ZIM looks at options on US west coast

Los Angeles: Reports from Israel suggest containerline ZIM is considering nixing Oakland from its US west coast calls. Oakland has stood out as the only port in the area where its ships have been unable to unload thanks to protesters voicing their anger at Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The movement, Ban the Boat, has been active in other ports, but it has only been Oakland where the protesters have been able to stop ships from calling. ZIM is understood to be disappointed with the local longshoremen at the port and is unwilling to call there until the local port workers can guarantee ZIM ships can unload cargoes easily.

For their part, the local longshoremen have said they have taken no position on the Israel/Gaza situation and that they have been threatened physically by the anti-Israel protesters. [01/10/14]
