Greek bulker struck by sea drone in Red Sea

A Greek-owned bulk carrier has suffered significant damage after being struck by an uncrewed surface vessel in the Red Sea off Yemen.

Multiple sources in Greece have identified the vessel as the Liberian-flagged Tutor.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in an update that the vessel had been hit on the stern by a small craft five to seven metres in length, adding later that another “unknown airborne projectile” also struck the 2022-built bulker.

Maritime security consultancy Ambrey said the incident took place about 68 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, adding that Houthis were likely behind the attack.

“The vessel aligned with the Houthi target profile at the time of the incident,” Ambrey said in an advisory note.

The 82,400 dwt vessel, operated by Evalend Shipping, was not transmitting an AIS signal at the time of the incident.

UKMTO said it received reports that the ship had lost its ability to manoeuvre as it sustained damage and water ingress in its engine room. No injuries have been reported.
