Position Summary

The Shipyard Estimator will prepare cost estimates for shipyard projects based on the specifications provided by the client. Relies on judgment and direction to plan and accomplish goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in the review and evaluation of requests for estimates, review revisions for completeness and accuracy, and help prepare timely completion of estimates.

• Obtain pricing for materials and assist in estimating cost where predetermined standards are unavailable.

• Ability to thoroughly read and comprehend blueprints (PDF or AutoCAD) and produce a work schedule.

• Develop a complete and concise labor hour and material dollar estimate that meets the requirements of the specification, drawing or work scope.

• Identify all the trades required to accomplish the work and develop a detail by trade of the hours required to accomplish the work.

• Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Microsoft Project.

• Maintain resource information on products, vendors, subcontractors, and government requirements.

• Participate in all activities of estimating projects to help ensure that goals or objectives of the project are accomplished within the prescribed time frame and funding parameters.

• Capably produce cost and man-hour/day estimates and milestones including critical path reports on GANTT charts.

• Proficiently communicate with engineers, owners, subcontractors and staff.

• Complete change order estimates for ongoing projects.

Education/Training

College engineering degree required; marine engineer license a plus. Knowledge of all aspects of ship repair and conversion, including vessel types, systems and components; skills in repair and conversion estimating for ship machinery and systems; or the combination of education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position. Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Microsoft Project. Three to five years of experience in a shipyard as a port engineer or repair supervisor required.

Physical Skills and Abilities

May require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to climb stairs; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 1 - 40 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read information. Use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, hard hats and safety footwear required while on work sites. Work will involve visiting work sites both indoors and outdoors at all times of the year. Normal Working Hours and Days

Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. including 1 hr meal break. Overtime as required.
