NKT wins $543m UK wind farm cabling contract

Danish offshore cabling specialist NKT has been awarded a €500m ($543.5m) supply contract for the delivery of an export cable system to the Ørsted-developed Hornsea 3 project in the UK.

The contract covers the design, manufacturing, jointing and termination of the system, which will include two circuits with a route length of around 170 km offshore and 50 km onshore DC cables, as well as four circuits for 1.5 km route of onshore AC cable.

Subject to Ørsted taking a final investment decision, Hornsea 3 will be located in the North Sea, some 160 km off the Yorkshire coast. When Hornsea 3 comes online, the combined capacity of Hornsea 1, 2 and 3 will be more than 5 GW, making it one of the world’s largest offshore wind zones.

NKT, which also delivered cables for the Hornsea 2, will produce the power cables in Sweden and plans to complete the project in 2027.
