SBM Offshore targets floating wind in Nova Scotia

Dutch-based SBM Offshore and Ireland’s renewable project developer DP Energy have set up a joint venture to pursue floating offshore wind energy opportunities off Nova Scotia, Canada.

The duo said they would work to support Nova Scotia’s ambitious climate action targets and “contribute meaningfully” to the phasing out of coal from the grid.

The Canadian province has set a target to offer leases for 5 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030, with the first call for bids in 2025.

FPSO specialist SBM Offshore has been looking to expand its footprint in the wind sector with its floating foundations and as a co-developer, including the Celtic Sea joint venture Floventis Energy and the Provence Grand Large floater pilot project in France.

The company’s local team has been engaged in Nova Scotia since 2021 with the objective of understanding local constraints and opportunities. “We believe that Canada’s offshore wind resource is among the best in the world. As an offshore energy transition company with proven experience in Nova Scotia, we are excited to expand our partnerships with the local community and write a new chapter, together,” said Severine Baudic, managing director of SBM Offshore’s new energies and services unit.

Simon De Pietro, CEO of DP Energy, which among others has teamed up with EDF Renewables UK for an up to 1 GW floating wind project in the Celtic Sea, said: “With SBM Offshore, we have found a strong partner to pioneer Canada’s floating offshore wind sector,” adding: “Floating offshore wind is an exciting new opportunity for Nova Scotia and will bring much needed new investment which can add to coastal economies and communities.”
