Altera Infrastructure fined over ship recycling destination

Altera Infrastructure has been ordered to pay a $747,000 fine in Norway in a long-running case over a decision to send two vessels for demolition in India.

The fine comes some four years after investigators first raided the offices of the company previously known as Teekay Offshore.

Altera Infrastructure has said it is considering challenging the verdict.

The case centres around two shuttle tankers – the Navion Britannia and the Alexita Spirit – which were sent for recycling in 2018. Prosecutors claimed the ships were beached in India, while Altera has always stated the yards selected were in compliance with the Hong Kong Convention, the globally recognised top standard for recycling.

Under Norwegian law, Altera now has two weeks to decide whether it will accept the decision.
