Safe Bulkers adds to kamsarmax orderbook in Japan

New York-listed Greek dry bulk owner Safe Bulkers has agreed to buy another 82,000 dwt newbuild from an unnamed Japanese shipyard with a scheduled delivery date within the first quarter of 2027.

The vessel is designed to meet the Phase 3 requirements of the Energy Efficiency Design Index related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as adopted by the International Maritime Organisation and comply with the latest NOx emissions regulation.

This newbuild is a sister vessel to several newbuilds in the company’s orderbook. The Polys Hajioannou-led company has already taken delivery of nine IMO GHG Phase 3 – NOx Tier III vessels.

Including this agreement, the company has an outstanding orderbook of nine newbuild vessels, two of which are methanol dual fuel, with one delivery set for 2024, two for 2025, four for 2026, and two for 2027.

“We are entering in this newbuild order consistent with our fleet renewal strategy, aiming to create a resilient company with a young and efficient fleet within the ever-developing stringent CO2 emission regulations environment,” said Loukas Barmparis, president of Safe Bulkers.

The Greek firm has already ordered three kamsarmax vessels this year. Namely, it announced in January that it was ordering one such vessel while the second came in late April.

Safe Bulkers’s fleet counts 46 vessels – 11 panamaxes, nine kamsarmaxes, 18 post-panamaxes, and eight capes.
