Safe Bulkers adds one more kamsarmax to orderbook

New York-listed Greek dry bulk owner Safe Bulkers has agreed to buy an 82,000 dwt newbuild bulker from an unnamed Japanese shipyard with a scheduled delivery date within the fourth quarter of 2026.

The vessel is designed to meet the Phase 3 requirements of the Energy Efficiency Design Index related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as adopted by the International Maritime Organisation and comply with the latest NOx emissions regulation.

The bulker is a sister vessel to several newbuilds in Safe Bulker’s orderbook. The Polys Hajioannou-led company has already taken delivery of nine IMO GHG Phase 3 – NOx Tier III vessels.

Including this agreement, it now has an outstanding orderbook of eight newbuild vessels, two of which are methanol dual fuel, with scheduled deliveries for one in 2024, two in 2025, four in 2026, and one in 2027.

“This latest newbuild order with relatively prompt delivery compared to present slot availability is part of our fleet renewal strategy and reflects our plans to own one of the most environmentally efficient dry bulk fleets in the market,” said Loukas Barmparis, president of Safe Bulkers.

The Greek firm has already ordered one kamsarmax this year. Namely, it announced in January that it was ordering one such vessel, less than month after it booked a kamsarmax newbuild set for delivery in the third quarter of 2026.

Safe Bulkers counts 46 vessels in its fleet, consisting of 11 panamaxes, nine kamsarmaxes, 18 post-panamaxes and eight capes.
