Maersk clarifies UK stance
Maersk has clarified its position on UK cadets and its commitment to the UK’s flag system. As per a report carried on Splash on Friday it will stop taking cadets from the UK, as well as South Africa.
“All cadets will be given the opportunity to complete their contractual training period to qualify as an Officer of the Watch, enabling them to meet international employment terms,” a spokesperson for Maersk told Splash.
Regarding the UK flag, contrary to reports carried by Splash and trade union Nautilus International, the Maersk official that there were no changes on the cards.
“We will continue to fulfil our statutory commitment under UK tonnage tax (UKTT),” the spokesperson said.
Maersk Line has not had any owned container vessels flying the UK Flag since December 2015, however there is currently one Maersk Line container vessel, Maersk Kimi that is subject to the UKTT – however it flies a Dutch flag, the official pointed out.
