Rolling strikes restart across DP World’s Australian operations
Dockworkers at DP World’s multiple terminals across Australia are on strike again this week. DP World’s Brisbane, Sydney and Fremantle container terminals will go on a rolling 48-hour strike starting today in Brisbane, while workers at the company’s Melbourne operations have decided to down tools for 96 hours. The workers said in a release their actions this week are in order to fight against automation, outsourcing, cuts to income protection insurance, and “dishonest bargaining” by the company which, they say, is trying to use change provisions in existing agreements to secure outcomes it cannot bargain into new agreements.
The industrial action follows the expiry of a three-month ceasefire agreement between DP World and local unions.
Maritime Union of Australia assistant national secretary Warren Smith commented: “This major escalation of industrial action is about sending a clear message to management that the safety, dignity, and job security of wharfies are absolutely non-negotiable.”
DP World has yet to officially comment on the latest standoff with its Australian staff.
