Greek VLCC attacked off Nigeria, one killed
Athens: The deputy captain of a Greek-owned VLCC was killed by gunmen, who boarded the vessel while it was waiting to load in Nigeria.
The attack happened in the early afternoon on Tuesday while the vessel was anchored at Qua Iboe, between Cameroon and Nigeria.
Three other crew members, two Greeks and a Pakistani, were taken hostage on the Malta-flagged vessel, Kalamos (281,000 dwt, built 2000), which is operated by Aeolos Management.
The other 19 crew members are safe, the Greek Coast guard said in a statement on Wednesday.
Greece’s ministries of Foreign Affairs and Finance are taking the necessary steps to recover the captain’s body, rescue the hostages and investigate the incident, the coastguard said.
