Bosphorus Strait closed after ship crashes into house
Athens: Turkey’s Bosphorus Strait is closed after a general cargo ship ran aground and smashed into a villa on the banks of the waterway.
The general cargo vessel Majed & Randy (6,476 dwt, built 1980) suffered a rudder malfunction and had no pilot onboard, causing it to collide with the building at 00:48hrs local time last night.
No injuries were sustained in the accident, according to reports from the GAC shipping agency.
Tugboats and a pilot were deployed by the Turkish Coastguard to assist the Sierra Leone-flagged vessel, which remains anchored nearby.
The Bosphorus remains closed and there has not yet been any report of when it will re-open to transit traffic.
