Flinterstar ruled a total loss after K Line LNG carrier collision
Dutch vessel Flinterstar (8,850 dwt, built 2002), which ran aground on a sandbank after a collision with K Line ship Al Oraiq (122,079 dwt, 210,198 cu m, built 2007) earlier this week, has been ruled a total loss.
In an update on Facebook last night, the ship’s owner Flinter said that the vessel was stable, the spilled oil clean up continues, while a contract to remove the oil still on board was signed yesterday afternoon. Earlier the company posted that “damage to our good Flinterstar much worse than we had hoped for. In only a few minutes she was turned into a wreck.”
A spokesperson for Flinter confirmed the news to Splash, saying: “She is a total loss. Last night a Smit consortium was appointed for the oil removal which has meanwhile started.”
Specialised vessels Cormorant and Multrasalvor 3 are on the scene and being used as part of the operations.
The accident happened on Tuesday morning around 10 km off Zeebrugge.
