TS Taipei splits in two
TS Lines’ containership TS Taipei has split in two near Keelung in Taiwan, amid stormy sea conditions.
The ship ran aground on March 10 and 21 crew were evacuated from the ship.
According to Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Department, the ship risks capsizing and some heavy fuel has already leaked from the ship.
TS Lines was pumping the fuel out of the ship after the incident, however, the work was suspended in the past two days due to harsh weather. The company earlier expected to finish retrieving the oil before April 7.
An official from the environment department said it could be disastrous if the remaining fuel and hazardous content on the ship all leaked into the sea.
The environment department has sent an emergency response team to the site.
