Saint Lucia becomes world’s newest open register
The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) after a thorough review of the Shipping Amendment Act has taken the decision to implement an open ship registry, something first mooted on Splash earlier this month.
The director of maritime affairs, Christopher Alexander commented: “The process has not been an easy one and though the decision has been made to implement the open ship registry, changes have to be made to our current legislation to ensure that the full benefits of the open ship registry are realised.”
St Lucia joins the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, St Kitts-Nevis, St Vincent, Grenada and the Grenadines in having an open ship registry in the Caribbean.
