CSL bulk carrier refloated
Less than two days after running aground in Canadian waters of the St Lawrence Seaway the Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) bulk carrier Whitefish Bay was back on its way on Thursday.
The vessel had blocked most of the seaway channel near Hamilton Island after running aground on rocks at the river bottom on Tuesday.
It apparently suffered a power failure and went off course while en route from St Catharines in Ontario to Bathurst in New Brunswick.
The 740-foot long Whitefish Bay, was carrying 28,000 tons of coal, 480 tons of heavy fuel oil and 53 tons of diesel fuel. It produced no pollution into the waterway and suffered no intake of water in the incident. Nor was any crew member reported hurt.
The ship was successfully dislodged from the rocks and refloated with the assistance of three tugboats and was headed to a safe anchorage for damage inspection.
