Oil spill near mouth of Mississippi
An oil spill of as much as 4,200 gallons discharged from a well into the Mississippi River near where it meets the US Gulf of Mexico, according to the Associated Press.
US Coast Guard said in a release that the well is owned by Houston-based Texas Petroleum Investment. The cause of the spill is not yet known and will come under investigation.
USCG was among several agencies – including the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries – involved in the spill response, as were private clean-up specialists OMI Environmental Solutions and Clean Gulf Associates.
The area affected is in Main Pass, close to the mouth of the river.
