Shipbuilding has been identified by Hanoi as a key industry to develop under a new economic plan likely to be unveiled officially shortly.
The Ministry of Planning and Investment will unveil a new economic plan through to 2020 with shipbuilding one of 13 industries highlighted for growth. Moreover, private firms will be sought to help grow the sector.
A massive corruption scandal at state run Vinashin – now rebranded SBIC – has blighted shipbuilding in the country for much of the past decade, but after significant restructuring Hanoi is now keen to resume a firm focus on nurturing the sector.
It comes, however, at a time of very limited demand for new ships around the world – and many of its Southeast Asian neighbours also gearing up to develop their own yards.
