MOL boxship suffers engine fire off Canada, two crew injured
Containership MOL Prestige, owned by Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, suffered a fire in its engine room, causing the ship to lose propulsion near the Canadian island Haida Gwaii on Wednesday while it was sailing from Vancouver to Tokyo.
After receiving a distress call, the Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) dispatched an aircraft and a helicopter to the ship and evacuated two injured crew to nearby Queen Charlotte City for medical treatment.
The other 21 crew remain onboard the vessel, which is still adrift southwest of Haida Gwaii. JRCC is now tracking the vessel.
A tug contracted by the owner is expected to arrive the scene on Saturday morning.
