‘Alarming’ leap in spot tonnage under 1,000 teu
The number of spot ships under 1,000 teu keeps rising to “alarming” levels, Alphaliner is reporting in its latest weekly report.
Alphaliner data shows there are currently 25 spot vessels in the 800-999 teu segment, most of which are in the Atlantic. This is more than double the number accounted for in mid-June.
“Seasonality, especially in the Atlantic, explains a good part of the sector’s woes,” Alphaliner explained.
Concluded recent charter deals for this niche box segment show rates are beginning to come under pressure. The 957 teu Vega Omikron, for instance, has just been fixed for three to six months at $8,250 a day, while the 862 teu Maersk Flensburg has just had its contract extended for up to eight months at $7,500 a day.
