The world’s most dangerous shipping destination has suffered another accident. Gadani, Pakistan’s main shipbreaking area, is reeling from another blaze inside a beached tanker, which injured seven workers on Sunday, with three now in a critical condition at a hospital in Karachi.
Officials had only recently readmitted tankers to be scrapped following a spate of accidents in Gadani, most notably a massive fire two years ago, which started from a welder’s spark, and killed 23 people.
Accidents at Gadani have continued ever since, with three fires reported in the last two months alone.
Sam,
The heading is misleading.
Pakistan may not be the safest “ship recycling destination”, but certainly, with more than 80pct (or even more) of Pakistan’s trade bwing by sea and therefore its contribution towards generating demand for world sea trade, it is amongst the top shipping destinations of the world.
Ship recycling is an evolving industry and Pakistan must improve its ship recycling standards.
Only lately has the number of accidents risen in Gadani. Given the number of tankers recycled, size of its yards and the level of mechanization , Pakistan has been infact the safest ship recycling destination in the world.
