BAE Systems lets go of another 300 staff from its Jacksonville yards

BAE Systems will lay off 300 employees from its two Jacksonville shipyards in mid-March, the company said yesterday.

“The workforce reduction is the result of further cuts in the demand for our commercial shipbuilding and repair services in Northern Florida. The shipyard also is experiencing reduced demand for Navy repair work at the Mayport Naval Station because of the Navy’s changes to its ship maintenance plan and the reduced number of ships homeported there,” the company said in a release.

BAE cut 100 staff from its payroll last autumn, leaving it with a total of 700 employees at its two yards in Florida.

The company operates seven full-service shipyards in Alabama, Florida, California, Virginia and Hawaii.
