Bumi Armada develops new FLNG concept

Malaysian floater specialist Bumi Armada has received approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a new floating liquified natural gas (FLNG) infrastructure solution.

This new FLNG concept incorporates a newly built barge-based liquefaction unit and the utilisation of existing LNG carriers for storage.

The company developed the barge-based liquefaction unit for a standardised LNG design capacity based on a modularised and repeatable design. This concept allows for a phased approach to deploy parallel liquefaction units to match any required capacity for the monetisation of gas.

According to Bumi Armada, this eliminates the need for large and costly onshore infrastructure. It also believes that reusing LNG carriers will provide a safe and quality option for LNG storage.

“This FLNG concept presents a promising solution to the pressing challenge of meeting the growing demand for cleaner, gas-based energy with a lower carbon footprint,” the company explained.
