China to launch container futures product

China will shortly launch a container shipping futures product, which will use the renminbi as the settlement currency.

The Shanghai Futures Exchange has been working with the Shanghai Shipping Exchange to develop the Shipping Index Futures.

Last year saw the launch of CME Group’s container freight futures in the UK covering six routes.

The futures move follows a period of record rate volatility, driven by the pandemic.
