Economou nominates two directors to Genco board

Greek shipowner George Economou has nominated two candidates for election to the Genco Shipping & Trading board of directors at the US dry bulk player’s next annual general meeting.

Economou, who owns a 5.4% stake in the New York-listed Genco via his affiliate GK Investor, has proposed Randee Day, president and CEO of maritime consultancy Day & Partners, and Robert Pons, president and chief executive at telecom and technology management consulting specialist Spartan Advisors.

Day, former interim CEO of DHT Maritime and managing director at the Seabury Group, is currently a director at US tanker owner International Seaways and fellow bulker owner Eagle Bulk Shipping.

Pons has served on the boards of directors of 16 publicly traded companies. He is currently a director of Marpai and has previously held board seats at Seachange International, CCUR Holdings, Alaska Communications and Inseego Corp., among others.

“As a significant Genco shareholder, I strongly believe in the company’s potential to deliver improved value for shareholders,” Economou stated, adding: “Both Randee and Robert have highly relevant backgrounds that would, in my view, be additive in the boardroom and would help address Genco’s lagging performance. I believe the entire board would benefit from their fresh perspectives and collective knowledge of the maritime and technology sectors and experience in finance, corporate strategy and governance.”

Genco has a fleet of over 40 bulkers in the capesize, ultramax and supramax segments. Economou’s position in the Manhattan-based company was flagged at the end of December last year, becoming the fourth major one after buy-ins in Palios family-linked tanker owner Performance Shipping and dry bulk player OceanPal, as well as Stamatis Tsantanis-led Seanergy Maritime.
