Equinor and EnBW join forces on German offshore wind

Norway’s Equinor and German energy group Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) have teamed up to jointly develop offshore wind farms in Germany.

The tie-up follows an auction launched by Germany’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) for four new offshore wind sites in the North Sea and the Baltic with a combined capacity of 7 GW and further tenders for 1.8 GW of offshore wind energy expected by March this year.

Germany, which seeks to cut its reliance on fossil fuel aims to achieve its offshore expansion goal of 30 GW by 2030.

EnBW was among the pioneers in offshore wind power with its Baltic 1 offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The company has invested nearly €5bn in its renewable energies segment and plans around €4bn more to boost its renewables portfolio to 50% by 2025. Meanwhile, Equinor has a strong presence in the North Sea and Baltic region with offshore wind farms in operation and under development in Germany, the UK, Poland and Norway.

“In a tough international field, we are delighted to be working together with a strong partner like Equinor and combining the individual strengths of the two companies to develop German offshore wind,” said Michael Class, head of renewables portfolio development at EnBW.
