Fire hits Beks cape off Russia

A fire broke out today onboard the Turkish-owned capesize bulk carrier Beks Force some 85 km south of the Russian Nakhodka port in the Sea of Japan.

The Marshall Islands-flagged 177,200 dwt ship, fleet register Equais listed as owned by Istanbul-based Beks Ship Management and Trading, was sailing from China to load coal in the port of Vostochny when the blaze erupted in the engine room on Friday.

Two out of 24 crewmembers were injured in the incident and were evacuated and brought to shore. The remaining crew, consisting of Indian nationals, refused to be evacuated, as reported by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

The latest AIS information shows the 2005-built vessel’s status as “not under command” with two ships located nearby. The crew has sealed the fire in the engine room, and according to local news outlets, the ship is afloat and there are no signs of an oil spill.
