Fire rips through cursed giant Russian icebreaker newbuild

The much-delayed delivery of the world’s largest diesel-powered icebreaker faces further problems after a massive fire broke out, destroying much of the vessel’s superstructure last night.

Keel laying for the Viktor Chernomyrdin took place more than six years ago with an initial delivery date of 2015. The huge icebreaker is named after a former Gazprom chairman who also served as prime minister of Russia.

Successive delays have seen the ship’s construction switch yards to Admiralty Shipyard in St Petersburg.

A fire last night ripped through much of the superstructure and was put out after nearly three hours with two people injured in the blaze.
