Four people have been killed and nearly 20 injured on a blast-hit Bangladeshi product tanker.
The 2012-built Shagor Nandini-2 suffered an explosion and fire in its superstructure in the Sugandha River in Jhalokati on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of four crewmembers and five more being injured.
A second blast occurred on Monday, triggering a fire during oil removal operations and injuring at least 14 people, including police officers.
The blaze was brought under control by four firefighting teams after about 10 hours on Tuesday morning.
The SHR Navigation-owned ship brought about 900,000 litres of fuel oil to the Padma Oil depot in Jhalakathi, of which some 400,000 litres have been recovered after the explosion.
The Shagor Nandini-2 tanker its hull breached last December, causing a massive oil spill in the Meghna River near the southern district of Bhola. In November 2021, the company’s Shagor Nandini-3 also suffered an explosion in the Sugondha River, with six people killed in the incident.
