German owners sign up for fresh MPP tonnage

German owners Nordic Hamburg and Briese Schiffahrt have signed a series of orders for up to eight multipurpose vessels in China.

Clarksons is reporting Nordic booked four 850 teu geared MPP heavy lift units at Huanghai Shipbuilding for delivery across 2025 and 2026.

Founded in 2006, a diversified owner of 18 ships according to ship valuation platform VesselsValue, Nordic Hamburg is also listed as having four 1,380 teu ships on order at Penglai Zhongbai Jinglu Ship Industry in China and three small-scale LNG vessels at Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft.

Meanwhile, compatriot Briese has added to its 32-strong newbuild orderbook with a contract at the same shipyard for two firm and two optional 12,500 dwt ships similar to those built and on order at Taizhou Sanfu Shipbuilding. The first two ships are set to deliver in the second half of 2025 for an undisclosed price tag.

German owners piling into Chinese yards has become a trend in recent weeks. Five owners recently teamed together with Hamburg-based project manager Arkona Allied Container (AAC) to order 11 methanol-ready 1,074 teu containerships.
