Hanwha Ocean completes DSME rebranding

Hanwha Ocean, formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), said Sunday that it completed the rebranding process at its Geoje shipyard in South Gyeongsang Province, almost three months after Hanwha Group took over the cash-strapped Korean shipbuilder in May.

The yard’s four gigantic orange cranes are now adorned with Hanwha Ocean’s new logo (pictured).

DSME, whose brass plaques adorn thousands of the largest, priciest, most high-tech vessels trading today, became Hanwha Ocean on May 23 this year.

DSME, acquired by Daewoo Group in 1978, had to be rescued by state creditors around a decade ago, and after many sell-off attempts was finally taken over by Hanwha Group, a diversified Korean conglomerate best known for its defence business.

Many other Asian shipbuilders have rebranded over the last few years, the most recent being the creation of Seatrium in Singapore following the combination of Keppel and Sembcorp’s yard businesses.
