Lomar cuts boxship exposure

Lomar Shipping has continued to be active on the containership sell side as it shifts its fleet towards bulk carriers and chemical tankers.

The UK-based diversified shipowner of Libra Group has seen four boxships exit the fleet bringing in nearly $39m.

The 2002-built, panamax 3,237 teu sister vessels Velika Express and Mirador Express estimated as worth $9.5m each, together with the 2005-built 5,047 teu OOCL St Lawrence, worth $15.8m, have all been delivered to clients of Greece’s Conbulk Shipmanagement.

The 2005 Nanjing Jinling shipyard-built 1,118 teu feeder boxship Hamburg Trader, worth around $7m, has also been delivered to an unnamed owner while positioned in Kingston, Jamaica, the company said.

The Nicholas Georgiou-led Lomar has been growing its footprint in the chemical tanker sector, most notably with the acquisition of Bremen-based Carl Büttner, while also adding several secondhand bulk carriers.

Earlier this year, Lomar revealed a trio of supramax bulker buys, its first since early 2022, estimated at nearly $43m. Sister site Splash Extra also reported purchases of Chinese-built panamaxes for a sum close to $50m.

These transactions coincided with the company’s disposal of five feeder boxships, acquired by German tonnage provider MPC Container Ships. The vessels were sold en bloc at a price close to $137m.
