Maersk eyes $400m Bangladeshi greenfield terminal

Robert Maersk Uggla met with the prime minister of Bangladesh yesterday, keen to extend APM Terminals’ footprint in South Asia.

APM Terminals is hoping to build a $400m terminal on 53 acres of land at Laldia on the banks of the River Karnaphuli, owned by Chattogram port.

Uggla, the chair of AP Moller Maersk, met with prime minister Sheikh Hasina as well as state minister of shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, proposing to get the development under way as soon as possible.

Bangladesh exports are growing exponentially, especially in the garments business. However, limited export infrastructure, including ports, is seen as putting a brake on economic growth.

Chittagong Port Authority chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail said last week he anticipates overseas investments of up to $7bn in in Chattogram port in the coming three years.
