Marinakis books pricey LNG carriers

Evangelos Marinakis’ Capital Group has been revealed as the owner behind a high-priced order for four liquefied natural gas carriers at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), a holding entity overseeing the shipyards of South Korea’s conglomerate HD Hyundai, announced the deal with an undisclosed shipowner for 174,000 cu m units in a regulatory filing last week.

Industry sources have linked the Greek owner to the quartet set to deliver by January 2028 at around $270m each. Although vessel details were not disclosed, brokers are quoting between $262m and $265m for South Korean newbuilds of similar capacity.

The latest deal takes the orderbook of the Marinakis-led company to 19 ships in LNG, ammonia and CO2 segments and 22 LNG carriers overall ordered in South Korea since July 2018.
