Naftomar orders world’s largest ammonia carriers

Hanwha Ocean, the South Korean shipbuilder formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, has won an order from Greece’s Naftomar worth $496m for four very large ammonia carriers.

The 93,000 cu m vessels will deliver by the first half of 2027 and the newbuilds can switch to using ammonia as fuel at a later date.

Hanwha Ocean claims the ships are the largest ammonia carriers ordered to date, a seaborne trade that is expected to pick up significantly in the coming years.
