Odfjell places its tankers under the microscope

Norwegian chemical tankers owner Odfjell has tapped Danish environmental engineering firm ReFlow to carry out a lifecycle assessment (LCA) of its vessels, as part of its commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation.

Described as the first commercial tanker LCA, the move is expected to provide insights into the life-cycle emissions of the vessels, from production to end-of-life, and help Odfjell identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to reduce their environmental impact, ReFlow said.

“This will enable us to become even more data-driven in our many decarbonisation projects and efforts, and we will get a better overview of the scopes of emissions involved across the life-cycle of our vessels,” said Øistein Jensen, chief sustainability officer at Odfjell.

Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen, CEO of ReFlow, stated: “As a company, we believe in the importance of conducting LCAs to identify areas for improvement and help companies reduce their environmental impact.”

The Copenhagen-based company will analyse the vessels’ materials, manufacturing, transportation, operation, and end-of-life phases.

The Oslo-listed Odfjell has a fleet of around 70 ships. The carbon intensity for its controlled fleet was reduced by 5.5% in 2022 and was 49% lower than the 2008 reference value when the company presented its annual report in March.
