Rena to remain on NZ reef

Nearly four and a half years since it ran aground in New Zealand, authorities today finally decided what to with the wreck of the boxship Rena.

The 3,351 teu Costamare-owed ship will remain on the Astrolabe Reef where it rammed into on October 5, 2011, local authorities have stated.

A 451-page report has been issued on the wreck, which details how the salvage operation to date has cost NZ$500m ($338m) and has removed 1,107 containers and 1,467 cu m of bunkers from the stricken ship. The ship split in two, three months after grounding.
