RWE, National Grid Ventures enter New Jersey offshore wind race

Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture between RWE and National Grid Ventures, has submitted its plan to provide up to 1.3 GW of new offshore wind capacity to New Jersey.

The proposal, submitted to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, will generate enough power for more than 500,000 homes annually if selected.

The JV was able to acquire its lease area – roughly 126,000 acres – in the New York Bight, the area between New Jersey and Long Island, with a potential capacity of over 3 GW of offshore wind in February 2022.

It will also infuse an estimated $6bn in economic benefits for New Jersey through programs to build an offshore wind workforce and supply chain.

The Community Offshore Wind project will reduce New Jersey’s electric system greenhouse gas emissions by 52m tons over the project’s lifetime.

The project will also support the state’s goal of reaching 11 GW of offshore wind energy by 2040. New Jersey has set a goal of reaching 100% clean energy by 2035.

Several projects have submitted their bids in recent days. Namely, Invenergy and energyRe submitted a bid for the 2,4 GW Leading Light Wind offshore wind project, the only American-led project in the New York Bight. Also, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, a 50:50 joint venture between Shell and EDF, submitted a proposal to expand its 1,51 GW Atlantic Shores Project 1 by supplying power to hundreds of thousands more homes.
